Gene Autry is "The Original Singing Cowboy." Atop his trusty horse Champion, this great American icon of the Old West rode off into many a sunset during the two decades that his music dominated both radio and TV airwaves.
His first notoriety as a singer was on the popular "National Barn Dance Show" owned by Sears & Roebuck. Gene became so popular that you could order a "Gene Autry Round-up Guitar" for $9.98 out of the Sears catalog! Afterwards, Gene became the pioneer of the Singing Western, starring in dozens of films. He was the biggest influence on music during the 1930's & 1940's, and he brought new respectability to country music. Gene's songs are now so imbedded in the cultural mind of our society, they are considered American standards.
