In fact, Floyd epitomizes what honky-tonk western country music is all about. He is considered one of the greatest country songwriters of all time, with over 200 recorded and published songs to his credit. This muti-talented performer was born on December 8, 1914 in Ryan, Oklahoma. Floyd began playing the guitar at an early age, and eventually added the mandolin and banjo to his list of skills. He first became acquainted with honky-tonk music in 1933 when he joined a band in San Antonio, Texas. Floyd's progressive thinking changed honky-tonk music forever after. He was the first country musician to utilize the electric guitar. Floyd was also the first honky-tonk player to employ lead, single-string guitar playing. His most popular song was the 1948 hit, "I Love You So Much, It Hurts." Many of the songs Floyd wrote were so popular that they became country & western and pop standards.
