The accomplisments of MERLE TRAVIS in country music is legendary. TRAVIS, probably best known for his composition SIXTEEN TONS a number one hit for TENNESSE ERNIE FORD in l955 was the inovator of the three fingered style of guitar picking copied by numerious guitarists the world over including CHET ATKINS. Not only was he a prolific song writer, actor, and musician he is responsible for the original concept of the solid bodied electric guitar.
